The History of Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery is widely used to improve the way that people look. For instance people when diets are not helping for people to lose weight, plastic surgery could be a leadout. A lot of people believe that this is a fairly new development but the truth is that these types of surgery have been performed for centuries. For most of the history of plastic surgery it was only done when necessary and not for purely cosmetic reasons which is something that has changed pretty dramatically in recent years.
Most people would be shocked to learn just how old plastic surgery is; in fact it is one of the oldest forms of medicine around. For thousands of years people have been repairing damage to the face with surgical procedures some of them were surprisingly sophisticated, including the use of skin grafts which dates back more than four thousand years. Far and away the leader in this field during ancient times was India where doctors developed many of the early techniques that went into the practice of repairing damage.
While it was the Indians who really developed the art of plastic surgery most of our knowledge of early plastic surgery came from the Greeks. It is pretty clear that most of what the Greeks learned on the subject came from India, but the Greek texts are the ones that survived and allowed surgeons during the Middle Ages to learn of their techniques. During the middle ages there were few advances in the practice of plastic surgery as they relied almost entirely on the Greek texts and never made any real effort to improve techniques themselves. As a result for a long time nothing new was developed.
This would all change during the renaissance in part because of a new found interest in science. However the bigger factor in why plastic surgery developed so rapidly during this period was because of new techniques in warfare. With gunpowder replacing cutting weapons as the main way of fighting battles surgeons had to deal with new types of injuries and this would lead to new techniques. This would continue right through modern times with new methods of fighting wars requiring new ways to treat the injuries that were suffered. As a result the practice of plastic surgery developed very rapidly.
One of the results of the developments of plastic surgery is that it reached the point where it could be done for cosmetic reasons. No longer was it just a way to minimize the damage done by an injury, you could actually improve the way that you looked with plastic surgery. This has led a lot of people to consider it as a way to change the way that they look and as new techniques that offer better results are developed more and more people will consider it. We are now at the point where plastic surgery for purely cosmetic reasons is widespread and this is likely to continue.
